Bikur Cholim
The Talmud comments on the fact that God appeared to Abraham to pay a sick call while Abraham was recovering
from his circumcision. Thus we learn that Bikkur Cholim, the commandment to visit the sick, is a very important
mitzva, with God setting the precedent for us. The purpose of Bikkur Cholim is to assist members of the congregation
who are ill. Since the Middle Ages, one of the principal institutions established by every Jewish community has been
the Bikkur Cholim Society. Our congregational family also provides support and comfort during times of illness and
hospitalization. We have straightened pillows, provided reading material, and picked up groceries. Sometimes it is
simply a matter of being there to alleviate anxiety and concern. If you become ill or know of another member who is
ill, please let us know.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Bikkur Cholim committee and are available to visit ill members of our congregation please contact bikurcholim@betmishpachah.org.
